Guitar / stick dulcimer class
July 26th & August 2nd
2-8pm 6 spaces available
In this two-day workshop, students will build their own stick dulcimer from solid maple and mahogany using a combination of hand tools and shop equipment. The instrument will be finished with a hand-burnished wax for a buttery-smooth feel and equipped with a passive piezo pickup for those who want to plug in and amplify. All materials and tools are provided, just bring your curiosity and a willingness to learn. Along the way, participants will gain an introduction to woodworking, instrument construction, basic music theory, and finishing techniques.
By the end of the class, everyone will leave with a fully playable, handcrafted instrument built to last a lifetime. This workshop is designed for all skill levels, no prior woodworking or musical experience is necessary.
The stick dulcimer is a unique and accessible stringed instrument with a naturally diatonic scale, meaning anyone can pick it up and start making music, no prior experience or knowledge of chords required. At the same time, it offers a rich and expressive tone that appeals to both beginners and seasoned musicians. Whether for casual play or live performance, this is an instrument that invites creativity.
Chris DeLozier is a professional luthier and custom acoustic guitar builder working out of his shop here at Soulcraft Makerspace. He is the owner of DeLozier Guitars, specializing in high-end acoustic builds and expert repair work. A graduate of the Galloup School of Guitar Building and Repair in Michigan, Chris brings years of experience in both woodworking and instrument making. His teaching style is approachable, hands-on, and rooted in the belief that anyone can learn to build a beautiful, functional instrument.
